If you're planning a trip to La Palma, chances are the volcano is at the top of your list. But finding the volcano route in La Palma isn't as simple as just driving there — this guide covers exactly where it is, how the route works, and what you need to visit it safely.

Where Is the La Palma Volcano Located?

The Tajogaite volcano sits on the Cumbre Vieja ridge, in the south of La Palma, near the municipality of El Paso. It's the newest addition to a much older volcanic system that runs down the spine of the island.

The volcano route in La Palma starts from a meeting point in Las Manchas, followed by a short transfer to Llano del Jable, where the hike itself begins.

Can You Visit the Volcano Route in La Palma on Your Own?

No. The area around Tajogaite is a restricted exclusion zone, due to ongoing gas monitoring and the fragile volcanic terrain. Access is only permitted with a certified guide — there's no public trailhead you can simply walk up to.

This isn't a bureaucratic formality: gas emissions in the area are actively monitored, and routes can be closed or rescheduled if levels rise.

What the Route Looks Like

The guided route covers around 7.2 km, with a descent of about 600 meters, walking over volcanic ash toward the edge of the crater. It's rated moderate difficulty — suitable for people in reasonably good physical condition, but not a technical climb.

How to Book the La Palma Volcano Route
